A series of safety training videos has been released to ensure all truck drivers have a better understanding of how to drive safely around bikes and other road users in cities with major construction underway.
The
truck driver video series is a collaboration between the National Road Safety Partnership Program and Transport Victoria.
The videos are an outgrowth of the construction trucks safety initiative initiated by Bicycle Network and the Metro Tunnel Project almost a decade ago.
The series, Truck Driver Interactions and Vulnerable Road Users, has been developed to support truck driver Toolbox Safety Talks and dedicated truck driver training sessions, and align with the Construction Trucks and Community Safety contract clause requirements on vulnerable road user-related training.
The goal of the videos is to help truck drivers understand how to navigate through busy streets safely, particularly where vulnerable road users can be present.
Parts of the Victorian road network feeding into these construction projects are used by high numbers of pedestrians, bicycle riders and motorcyclists.
The new training videos offer practical safety tips on how truck drivers can safely share the road with these users.
The range of topics covered by the video include:
- truck blind spots
- safe stopping distances
- overtaking bicycles
- pedestrian distraction
- the additional driving skills needed to remain safe near vulnerable road users.
Importantly, the Department of Transport and Planning has now released
guidance for local government authorities that want to improve construction truck safety on local projects.
