Warrawong Parklands transformation ahead
The New South Wales Government has released a draft Master Plan to transform the Warrawong Parklands into an iconic outdoor destination – featuring nearly 10 kilometres of new bike and pedestrian paths.

The plan imagines the 32-hectare parklands as a recreational, cultural and commercial hub for the Illawarra region, set against the picturesque backdrop of Lake Illawarra's foreshore.

The proposed bike and pedestrian paths include a mix of 3-metre shared commuter paths, scenic shared paths around the lake edge, pedestrian-only paths and a learn-to-cycle loop.

As well as a boost for riders, the parklands are envisioned to have:

  • improved lake access including a water sports hub
  • an Olympic-standard skatepark and upgraded sports fields and playgrounds
  • a 320-metre scenic wetland boardwalk
  • new spaces for cultural events, outdoor performances and lakeside dining
  • a strong focus on environmental restoration, including the planting of native plants, enhanced wetlands, walking trails and birdwatching areas.
The draft Master Plan marks the second phase of public consultation on the future of the parklands, following strong community interest during the initial planning stages.

Community members are invited to share written feedback on the draft by 5pm, 15 October 2025. Details are available here.

There will be drop-in sessions at local venues during the exhibition period:

  • Saturday 27 September 2025, 10am–12pm, Warrawong Plaza, Corner of King and Cowper Streets
  • Thursday 2 October 2025, 5.30pm–7.30pm, Stockland Shellharbour, Lake Entrance Road
  • Saturday 4 October 2025, 9am–1pm, Warrawong Markets, Northcliffe Drive.
The final Master Plan is expected to be released later this year, incorporating feedback from the community.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces and Member for Wollongong, Paul Scully, said: "For too long this 32-hectare parkland has not had the interest or investment that it or the surrounding community deserved, and this is an opportunity to shape the future of this recreational space.

"Lake Illawarra is a beautiful backdrop, and we want the community to have their say on this Master Plan."
