The Wimmera River Discovery Trail between Dimboola and Jeparit is now open.
The journey is an amazing experience of a unique Australian environment, including mallee scrub, floodplain wetlands and river red gums.
A vast array of native vegetation is present along with wallabies and other wildlife.
The 60-kilometre route mainly follows the river along dirt tracks, some sandy, some clay, and local roads. Some sections are on private land, with crops adjacent to the path.
There are some rugged gullies where walking your bike will be necessary. A mountain bike or touring-style bike is advisable.
When the river level is high some sections may be unavailable.
The trail has camping locations with fire pits and toilets.
There were many years of initial planning, working with state and federal governments to determine the route, which is along the east side of the river between the towns.
Funding was secured from both the state and federal governments, and the Hindmarsh Shire Council worked closely with Parks Victoria and Barengi Gadjin Lands Council in developing the project.
The route is near other significant local natural attractions include the Big Desert Wilderness Park, the Little Desert National Park and the Wyperfeld National Park.
At its northern end the trail goes through the wetlands of nearby Lake Hindmarsh.
Hindmarsh Shire mayor Ron Ismay said: “While this project has taken longer than expected, it’s truly thrilling to see it come to fruition, and we welcome this fantastic asset for locals and visitors.
“We’ll continue to look for opportunities to enhance the trail into the future.”
More information about the Wimmera River Discovery Trail, including maps, entry points and user guides, are available on the
council's website.
