Ride2Work Day shaping up across the state

Ride2Work Day is on Wednesday 15 October this year and activities are shaping up across the island with the Hobart breakfast looking more like an all-things cycling fair!

Registrations are now open for people who intend to ride to work on the day.

Hobart breakfast fair

Hobart’s breakfast will once again be held at Mawson Place from 7.30am until 9am but we’ll be joined by a few more organisations to bring the vibe.

We’re welcoming 99 Bikes again this year, who are celebrating a year of Hobart operations. They’re thanking Hobart by offering tune-ups in the run up to and following Ride2Work Day at the bottom of the Rivulet path between 8am and 9.30am, tune in to our Facebook page to find out which days.

The Bike Van will be along to check your bikes and offer advice as well as showcasing the cargo bikes they are repping for Dutch Cargo Bikes in Melbourne.

The City of Hobart’s transport team want to talk to you about the amazing Hobart E-bike Library and what end-of-trip facilities are like at your workplace.

The University of Tasmania’s Environment Society will be on hand to spread the word about their Commute4Climate competition (more about that below) and will be joined by Jimmy’s Skate.

Hobart Bike Kitchen have relaunched at their new location at the South Hobart Tip Shop but they need more “chef de velos”. Come along to talk to them about what’s involved so you can enjoy the warm, rosy glow of helping others to roll.

To round it off, Streets People Love Hobart will let you know how you can get involved to build support for climate-resilient streets that feature more plants, seating, active transport, disability compliance and public transport. They are looking for people to join their Hobart Christmas Pageant entry this year.

And of course we’ll be there with our smoothie bike and everyone who signs up on the morning goes into the running for one of three prize bags, one of which has a 1-year Bicycle Network membership inside.

Other brekkies

Last year our intrepid volunteer Mark trialled a breakfast in Kingston with a quick response grant from the council and support from the Australian Antarctic Division, and he’s cobbling funding together to run another one this year: 7:30am - 9am, Maxie Coffee, 26 Channel Hwy, Kingston (across from Kingborough Council).

Head along to talk to other commuters, bike salespeople and mechanics, cargo bike parents, local policy makers, active transport advocacy experts and council transport and recreation staff. Turning up is a valuable way to show local decision-maker that cycling support is appreciated.

The Tamar Bicycle Users Group will be putting on coffees and pastries at Civic Square from 7.30am, get along to help them build momentum in the north for safer riding routes through town. They are also looking for more volunteers to help advocate.

Ride2Work Day Pledge

We’ve started the Ride2Work Day Pledge this year to encourage organisations across the state to show their support for safe, active transport for their employees.

We’ve had several signups but are looking for more, so if you are a business or can advocate for your employer to sign up, let us know. https://bicyclenetwork.com.au/rides-and-events/ride2work/r2w-pledge/

Commute4Climate is back!

Last year the University of Tasmania’s Environment Society trialled a commuter competition throughout October and this year they are back bigger and better.

Head to www.commute4climate.com to sign up for your active commutes to go into the running for prizes from Red Parka, Teros, Keep Tassie Wild, Pennicott Wilderness Journeys, Giant Hobart, Paddy Pallin and more!

The only cost to take part is a donation to the Tasmanian Bike Collective. The collective works with students struggling at school by getting them to focus on bike repair to help motivate them to control their behaviour and commitment to learning.
