Authorities are concerned about riders taking e-bikes on to environmentally sensitive beaches in Victoria.
There have been recent reports of e-bike riders disturbing migratory birds and running their wheels over crabs on the beaches at Phillip Island.
Phillip Island is renowned for its natural attractions, in particular the Island’s penguins, which draw visitors from around the globe.
E-bikes are not permitted on beaches in Victoria and riders face fines for doing so.
A spokesperson for Phillip Island Natures Parks, which manages the Penguin Parade and other conservation projects on the Island, said it was disappointing to see e-bike riders causing damage to sensitive habitats and foraging grounds along beaches, which were home to endangered and protected birds such as fairy terns and hooded plovers.
“Bikes are not permitted on Phillip Island Nature Parks beaches, both for the safety of other beach users, as well as the protection of fragile ecosystems.”
