Wilson Street cycleway proposed
The New South Wales Government is proposing to build an east–west cycleway on Wilson Street in Newtown, between Eliza Street and east of Erskineville Road.

The bi-directional, separated cycleway would connect riders between Newtown, Redfern and the city centre, filling in a missing link between the shared zone on Eliza Street and the existing one-way cycleway on Wilson Street east of Erskineville Road. The new cycleway would be approximately 2.5 metres wide and 150 metres long.

The project would also involve introducing a new signalised crossing at Eliza Street and a raised bike crossing on Wilson Street, and road resurfacing including line marking and speed humps.

Following public feedback on the initial design from last year, there will be a new loading zone on the western side of Erskineville Road (between King and Wilson streets), improved signage along the cycleway and removal of the left turn from Wilson Street (eastbound) into Erskineville Road for drivers.

A review of environmental factors has now been developed and is now on public display here. Community members and other stakeholders can submit feedback on the review using this online feedback form by Friday 24 October 2025.

The project received delivery funding from the federal government in partnership with the state government in early 2025. The federal government funding comes through its Active Transport Fund.

Pending planning approval and consultation, construction is expected to begin in 2026 and take around 11 months.
