Back on your Bike attracts funding

Bicycle Network’s Back on your Bike program has received a grant from the Tasmanian Road Safety Advisory Council that will provide core funding to allow the continuation of the program on a limited scale for another year.

The program has successfully worked with more than 500 participants over the past two years to get more people riding more often.

If you know someone who needs a hand to get riding again or are involved in a workplace or organisation that could do with some skills sessions for low confidence riders, get in touch: bicyclenetwork.com.au/back-on-your-bike

Some of the group sessions we've delivered over the years include Reclink, University of Tasmania, TasTAFE, MONA, Farm it Forward, Sisters on a Roll and many councils across the state.

Launceston bike parking remains on hold

The secure bike parking in Launceston’s Paterson Street car park has not been usable since March but the council can’t say when it will be fixed.

Launceston resident Malcolm Cowan submitted questions to the council about the lack of secure bike parking, especially in light of the new intrastate bus terminal not providing any parking.

The response he received is that the council is still considering the “suitability of the assets before undertaking repair and reinstatement.”

Clarence seeks out safer speeds

Clarence City Council is asking the community what they think speed limits should be on streets throughout its municipality.

The question comes as the council grapples with how to improve safety on its streets, especially for people walking, riding and driving locally.

Have your say before 15 October via www.yoursay.ccc.tas.gov.au/safer-speeds-safer-roads. Once the consultation is closed the council will collage the information and prioritise reducing speeds on roads that will likely provide the biggest safety benefit.

Launceston to fix West Tamar Trail

The City of Launceston has announced the perfect Chrissie present for bike riders: an upgrade to the 1.2km of the West Tamar Trail between Launceston and the Tailrace Park.

The path will be resurfaced with asphalt that contains recycled glass, widened from 2.5m to 3m and re-aligned for a 400m section to avoid high-tide flooding.

The works will be finished before Christmas, more information at www.launceston.tas.gov.au/News-Media/West-Tamar-Trail-upgrade-on-the-right-track

Temporary Argyle St lane closure
The new Argyle Street bike lane and footpath between Liverpool and Bathurst streets will be closed on Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 October to allow the hospital to crane in equipment for its new breast screening clinic.

The closures will happen between 8.30am and 3.30pm on each day and detours will be put in place.
