Tassie Bike News Bites
Windy conditions didn’t deter Ride2Work

It was a windy old morning for Ride2Work Day this year but it didn’t deter regular riders from heading to work on two wheels.

Breakfasts were held at Mawson Place in Hobart, Channel Highway in Kingston and Civic Square in Launceston. Thanks to Hobart, Launceston and Kingborough councils for supporting the breakfasts to encourage more people to choose to ride.

Kingborough's breakfast was held for the second time thanks to Mark Donellon from Streets People Love Hobart and the Tamar Bicycle Users Group continued the Launceston breakfast tradition.

Members film night in Hobart

Bicycle Network is marking 50 years of operation this year and we want to share the joy with our members at a film night in Hobart on Tuesday 11 November.

Bicycle Network CEO Alison McCormack will be presenting the documentary Lael Rides around the World which showcases the Guinness World Record fastest bike trip across the globe (29,000 km). Lael Wilcox's relentless Alaskan optimism and stunning landscapes make this a cycling feel-good watch.

Book your ticket through our Eventbrite listing - all the money raised will go to funding of our Tasmanian programs.

Cycleway daytime detours at Moonah

The City of Hobart will be shutting a short section of the Intercity Cycleway during the day from Monday 27 October to Tuesday 19 November between Bromby Street and Brownells Lane.

The closures will occur between 9am and 3pm, during this time riders will have to detour via the footpath on Main Road.

Sally’s Ride open

Launceston’s biggest community ride is back on Sunday 23 November this year with entries now open: www.sallysride.com.au

There are four ride route choices between 10km and 100km and adult entry prices range from $10–$60.

Sally’s ride is run by Rotary and proceeds go to mental health research through Australian Rotary Health.

Win for member advocacy

We always encourage riders to advocate when they see how conditions could be improved for bike riders and Di did so recently when she saw a development application for a new apartment building in Hobart.

As an apartment owner herself she knows how important it is to provide enough bike parking spaces and so made a representation. This has led to the developer increasing the number of bike parking spaces from 10 to 35, making it easier for future residents to choose to ride.

Kingborough finishes new path connector

Kingborough Council has finished a new shared path which connects the Whitewater Creek Track up to the Summerleas Road–Channel Highway roundabout.

The new connector provides another cycling access route between Kingston Park and Kings Quarter development and the start of the Kingston shopping area.

It replaces a gravel track.
