While the benefits of reducing speed limits on selected streets are now well proven following the world-wide trend to lower traffic speeds, there is still opposition from die-hard freedom lovers.
And dying hard is what speedsters do. Unfortunately, it is something they often do to other people on the street.
Victoria has moved towards making it easier for councils to introduce 30km/h speed zones, especially where bike riders and pedestrians are likely to be more numerous.
And Infrastructure Victoria recently made a formal recommendation that Victorian and local governments work to reduce speed limits to 30km/h on local streets, starting in places that children often visit, including around schools, playgrounds, childcare centres and kindergartens.
To help the community understand the benefits, and dispel the myths, Infrastructure Victoria has produced a short animated video to get the message across on social media.
