Work has begun on widening the Sturt Highway over Marshalls Creek in Wagga Wagga, a move that will improve safety and access for riders and pedestrians.
The existing bridge is a two-way, two-lane route, which limits traffic flow and forces vehicles to slow through this section of the Sturt Highway.
Transport for NSW is replacing the crossing with a four-lane bridge to ease congestion and improve safety.
The new bridge will feature a 3-metre-wide shared path on the southern side of the bridge and a 1.8-metre-wide footpath on the northern side.
Its two lanes will be upgraded to four, plus two 2.5-metre-wide shoulders.
The project is funded by a $30 million roads package provided by the state government.
Piling work has now begun and is expected to be completed on the bridge's northern side by early 2026. The bridge's construction is expected to take about two years to complete.
