The Federation Trail now connects all the way through to the Yarra River following the opening of the new elevated path at the West Gate Bridge.
Riders that have travelled the trail alongside the West Gate Freeway from Brooklyn to Yarraville can now continue on ramps and bridge structures over both Williamstown Road and the Williamstown/Werribee railway corridor and through to the Bay Trail West and Yarra Punt at Hyde Street.
The shared path on Hyde Street then takes them through Yarraville to connect with the Dixon Veloway at Shepherd Bridge over the Maribyrnong.
Or they can head south to Williamstown or further to Altona Beach or even to Werribee via Point Cook.
A new feature is another ramp and shared path that connects riders down to the Stony Creek Reserve and Hall Street in Spotswood, linking to the railway station and shopping centre.
A shared path is planned all along Hall Street through to Newport, to be constructed probably in the wake of the level crossing removal and new railway station soon underway at Spotswood.
There is also a new bridge across the Stony Creek within the reserve. There is a large-scale planting along the creek with vegetation suitable for the riparian zone.
There are some great views from the ramps, which are long, but with a gradual incline which should not deter riders.
The Federation Trail along the historic brick outfall sewer to Werribee, opened in 2006, originally only reached as far as Brooklyn, where it stalled at the freight line.
That was bridged in 2014, and now the Werribee rail line has been crossed, bringing the Federation Trail all the way to the Yarra River traffic-free.
