Authorities in China have seized more than A$2.4M of fake bike components, including helmets, destined to be sold internationally through online retailer AliExpress.
Two manufacturing operations were closed down in the sting, which uncovered counterfeit Specialized frames, handlebars and Roval wheels, as well as fake Pinarello, Cannondale, Cervélo and Trek products.
AliExpress has for some years been a popular source of bike components for bargain-hunting Australian riders.
However global brands, especially Specialized, have been working for years to alert the market to the risks of purchasing these knock-off products that do not meet design standards or have not been subjected to safety testing.
This latest raid indicates the scale of these illegal operations and suggests that there may be a large volume of these dodgy components in circulation.
AliExpress itself initiated the latest move in conjunction with Chinese law enforcement.
"Counterfeit products imitating Specialized's high-performance goods not only infringe on [intellectual property rights] but also pose serious risks to consumer safety,” the company said.
"These fake items often bypass stringent quality and safety standards, potentially endangering users and undermining consumer trust in legitimate products.
"Specialized has tested these counterfeit cycling helmets and frames, and they fail safety standards. Sometimes catastrophically."
Andrew Love, Specialized's global brand protection manager said that Specialized was unwavering in its commitment to protecting its riders and upholding a zero-tolerance policy against dangerous counterfeit products.
"These illicit operations not only exploit consumers but also undermine trust in authentic goods,” he said.
"We are fully dedicated to safeguarding our customers and combating organised crime on a global scale.
"The success of this largest counterfeit bust in the cycling industry highlights the profound impact of collaboration between brands like ours and tech-driven platforms like AliExpress.”
"Chinese law enforcement and Alibaba deserve immense recognition for their integral role in achieving this milestone,” he said.
