The City of Melbourne has started planning to expand Normanby Reserve, across the road from the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, in Southbank.
It is keen for rider feedback on the proposal as the trail to Port Melbourne via the Sandridge Rail Trail goes through the reserve.
There are in-person opportunities for information and involvement with the consultation. Submissions close on 8 February 2026.
The plan envisages rearranging the layout of the area between Clarendon Street and the West Gate Freeway to create more than one hectare of open space.
The existing area is poorly laid out and the current road alignment wastes space that could otherwise be used productively.
The bike route could benefit from fewer conflict points with pedestrians moving though the area, which also contains the tram corridor.
The area is on the border of the cities of Melbourne and Port Phillip, so there will be multiple agencies and interests involved in approving any changes.
Once the current technical and feasibility studies are completed, a final concept plan will be considered by the City of Melbourne next year.
