Sunshine project details emerge
The state and federal governments have released some initial design concepts for the Sunshine rail upgrade, include bike-friendly enhancements at Sunshine Station and the new station announced for Tottenham.

The early design concepts show a new bike-rideable concourse over the tracks at Sunshine, a major improvement to a precinct where the rail corridor had become a near-impermeable barrier to people riding.

And Tottenham, which had great bike access along the corridor to the station but terrible access across the corridor, now has promise of a new station with vastly improved access.

There will also be a new station at Albion, which, when combined with other new path alignments beyond the station, will also result in proper bike connections through the precinct for the first time.

Riders in and around Albion and Sunshine will be aware of detours currently in place while early works are underway. Note that new and improved signage for these detours will be in place soon. Meantime follow the map here.

The first stage of the Airport Rail project tackles the track tangles and station limitations between West Footscray and Albion.

These changes are needed to meet the requirements of multiple additional services coming in the future from the west, the north and the airport.

The early designs show a revitalised Sunshine Station, with an extended concourse and two new platforms and tracks dedicated to regional trains.

This includes a pedestrian and cycling path over the rail line, upgraded bus interchange, and a new station forecourt with open spaces at each entrance.

Designs for the new Tottenham station will be released later this year, with construction set to start in 2027.

Public consultation has opened to allow community feedback to contribute to the designs of the new rail facilities.
