It’s been ages since I’ve ridden a bicycle, how do I get back into it?
-
First check the chain is oiled, brakes are working and tyres are pumped. There are basic You Tube tutorials that can help you or take it to your local bike mechanic. Check out more tips on bike preparation here.
-
Check out a social ride in your area. Many local councils run free bike rides (see, e.g., the City of Boroondara) or check out your local Bicycle User Group (e.g., the Merri-bek BUG) or other community groups such as Neighbourly Ride.
-
Rope in a friend. Increase your confidence by going for a ride with a mate!
I’ve never ridden for transport, how do I start?
-
Look at where the cycling infrastructure is near your workplace or home and map a route that minimises busy roads and right-hand turns where possible.
-
Try out your route on a weekend or another quieter time so you can build confidence and familiarity.
