The Princes Hill Primary School community could have an attractive and safe new approach to the school under a proposal from the City of Yarra.
In collaboration with the school, Yarra City has developed a new street arrangement for the school precinct which will provide better links to surrounding areas and a better streetscape outside the school, with wider footpaths, more greenery and a safer environment for active transport.
At Wilson Street the school frontage will open onto a wide share space for walking and bike riding.
A small section of Park Street will be closed to car traffic on the east side of the intersection with Wilson Street.
A one-way traffic system will be created by converting Solly Avenue to one way for cars (westbound) between Wilson Street and Holton Street West.
The project is part of Yarra City’s New Deal for Schools where it works with local primary schools to promote active transport and give children and parents the confidence and skills to walk, ride and scoot to school.
“Traffic congestion around schools creates safety risks, poor air quality, and stressful situations for children, families and local communities,” Yarra says.
“This creates barriers and can discourage children to travel in the way they want to and be active, healthy and social getting to and from school.”
“Students at Princes Hill Primary School have told us they want more choice in how they get to school – whether that’s walking, scooting or bike riding, especially with their friends.”
