A new 2.2-kilometre east–west cycleway will link central Campbelltown with the picturesque bushland of Smiths Creek Reserve and the Georges River.
Funded by the state government's Metropolitan Greenspace Program and Campbelltown City Council, the $1.8 million project will create a new walking and cycling link along Broughton Street between the Campbelltown city centre and Smiths Creek Reserve at Airds.
The project will be delivered in five stages. Planning for Stage 1, between Waminda Avenue and Smiths Creek Reserve at Georges River Road, is now underway.
Stage 1 will include a dedicated cycleway, pedestrian crossings, new footpaths, new tree plantings, lighting, seating and benches.
Concept designs are expected in mid-2026, with construction slated to begin in early 2027.
Mayor of Campbelltown, Darcy Lound, said the project would form an important link.
"This project will make it easier for people to walk and ride, improving safety for children walking and cycling while providing a better streetscape for everyone," he said.
"Broughton Street is a key connection from the city centre to suburbs such as Airds and Ruse, as well as the rich bushland of Smiths Creek Reserve and the nearby Georges River.
"As our city continues to grow, it's important that residents have a diverse range of transport options that support healthy lifestyles and allow people to walk and cycle for short trips."
The project was identified as priority in the council's Campbelltown Bicycle Plan, which aims to improve connectivity between outlying suburbs, the city centre and regional recreational trails.
