New Greenway routes for Boroondara
Riders through Melbourne’s eastern suburbs will soon have some new path options for getting around their local area.

Fifty-three new routes are under consideration for inclusion in a new Greenways Plan featuring shared paths, mostly off-road, enriched with vegetation, and linking important destinations.

The long-term plan reflects the council’s sustainability focus, with the Greenways forming biodiversity corridors across the municipality.

Boroondara is seeking your feedback on 30 new street-based paths to link up the existing routes in parks and reserves across Boroondara. Street-based paths could involve a shared path, a protected on-road link or a widened footpath.

The council is also seeking feedback on 23 new links in parks and reserves, which will be 3 metres wide in gravel with composite edging. They can also be concrete, asphalt and other surfaces, depending on location, safety and drainage requirements.

These links will be supported with planting to encourage biodiversity and increase shade and be carefully located to minimise loss of trees and avoid loss of space currently used for sport.

And they will make it easier for local families to walk or ride to schools, sports fields or shops instead of driving.

The council has also identified streets that may be suitable for improvements to local wayfinding and traffic calming.

These streets can improve local access between Greenways and destinations such as schools, community facilities and shops.

Examples of wayfinding and traffic calming include directional signage, pavement markings and reduced speed limits.

You can check out the proposed new links and submit comments, use the interactive map, take a survey and even suggest new locations here.

There are pop-up sessions where you can speak to council staff at the following times:

  • Saturday 18 April, 9am to 11am, Hislop Park, Balwyn North
  • Saturday 18 April, 1pm to 3pm, Eric Raven Reserve, Glen Iris
  • Friday 24 April, 9.30am to 11.30am, Ferndale Park, Glen Iris
  • Wednesday 29 April, 12.30pm to 2.30pm, Park Avenue Reserve, opposite Kew Depot Recycling Drop-off Centre at 31 Hutchinson Drive, Kew
With $3 million already committed this financial year, the development of the Greenways Plan supplements work underway already on various new and improved active transport links.
