New Tasman Bridge access finished

The Tasmanian Government has finished a new short access path to the southern side of the Tasman Bridge on the River Derwent’s eastern shore.

The new direct access right next to the bridge replaces the longer and steep route via Conara and Leprena roads.

The new access is also steep but some switchbacking of the path attempts to reduce the gradient for path users.

The path is wide enough to feel comfortable if someone else is coming the other way but watch out for the first corner off the bridge as it’s quite tight compared to the rest of the path.

Overall, sightlines are good so you can see other people in plenty of time as long as they are not going too fast.

The access path has been built to make it easier for riders when the government closes the bridge paths one at a time to replace the outdated barriers.

A tender for the barrier work was advertised last year, with work on the barriers scheduled to begin in the middle of this year.
