Petition to complete popular rail trail gains momentum

A community campaign to complete the remaining 74 kilometres of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail is rapidly gaining momentum, with more than 2,000 signatures already collected, and organisers saying they are just getting started.

Northern Rivers Rail Trail Supporters president Pat Grier is pushing for government funding to complete the missing Byron section that will link Crabbes Creek to Lismore and deliver a continuous 132km trail through one of Australia’s most scenic regions.

“I’m aiming for 100 times that,” said Grier about the 2000-plus signatures to date. “If everyone who has used the trail in the last two years adds their name, there’ll be no ignoring the people of the Northern Rivers.”

Trail use has already far exceeded expectations, attracting more than 180,000 visitors over the past two years, well above the original forecast of 25,000 annually. According to the trail’s management team, the completed Tweed section alone boosted the local economy by more than $3.7 million in its first year.

Byron Shire Council recently reaffirmed its support, officially approving its 54km section with Councillors voting in favour of the major project.

Once finished, the Northern Rivers Rail Trail will rank among the longest rail trails in Australia, offering a safe, car-free corridor for cyclists, walkers, runners and mobility scooter users.

Organisers are targeting 100,000 signatures to present to state and federal governments to secure the final funding needed.
