The Metro Tunnel Project is back on city streets with reinstatement and rectification works in the State Library precinct.
Teams will be working on roads and footpaths across A’Beckett, Stewart, Franklin and Swanston streets in stages between today, Tuesday 21 April 2026, and Wednesday 27 May 2026.
There will be nights works at some locations from 1am to 5am, Tuesday 21 to Thursday 23 April 2026.
Riders should be alert to various temporary road closures and traffic diversions during this period.
Traffic controllers will be on site to assist with vehicle and pedestrian movements.
Stewart Street works
Monday 20 April–Wednesday 29 April 2026, 7am–4pm
Stewart Street will be closed between 7am and 4pm and then reopened overnight from 4pm to 7am for through access from Franklin Street to A’Beckett Street. Teams are:
- removing existing road surface
- laying asphalt to form a new road surface
- reinstating kerbing
- removing pram ramp cuttings.
Swanston Street works
Tuesday 21 April–Thursday 23 April 2026, 1am–5am
Near A’Beckett Street. Vehicles requiring access to A’Beckett Street via Swanston Street will be detoured via Little La Trobe Street and Elizabeth Street.
Teams are carrying out concrete block modification.
A’Beckett Street and the corner of Stewart Street works
Thursday 30 April–Tuesday 12 May 2026, 7am–4pm
Note that these works may start earlier depending on the completion of works at Stewart Street.
The footpath on the southern side of A’Beckett Street between Swanston Street and Elizabeth Street will be closed between 7am and 4pm.
Teams are:
- removing footpath surface
- installing new concrete drainage pits
- laying asphalt to form a new footpath surface
- reinstating kerbing.
A’Beckett Street works
Wednesday 13 May–Friday 22 May 2026, 7am–4pm
Note that these works may start earlier depending on the completion of works at A’Beckett Street and Stewart Street.
The footpath on the southern side of A’Beckett Street between Swanston Street and Elizabeth Street will be closed between 7am and 4pm.
Teams are:
- removing footpath surface
- laying asphalt to form a new footpath surface
- reinstating kerbing
- removing footpath pavers.
Franklin Street works
Monday 25 May–Wednesday 27 May 2026, 7am–4pm
Note that these works may start earlier depending on the completion of works at A’Beckett Street.
There will be a stop and hold traffic arrangement in the eastbound lane.
Teams are:
- removing footpath surface
- laying asphalt to form a new footpath surface
- reinstating kerbing.
