Tassie Bike News Bites
E-scooters out, e-bikes in

Big news from City of Hobart that they are getting rid of the public e-scooters in preference for e-bikes.

The city will start looking for a new e-bike provider soon, with the preference being for smaller, more compact styles.

The e-scooters are being ditched because of safety concerns with user behaviour and parked scooters blocking footpaths.

Hobart's decision means it joins Melbourne and Sydney in rejecting the public e-scooter option.

Liverpool Street bike lane to go

The City of Hobart has advised that the emergency department upgrade work at the Royal Hobart Hospital will take over the bike lane on Liverpool Street from early May.

No arrangements have been made for a temporary bike lane, so riders will have to use the general traffic lane or footpath to access the hospital.

The bike lane closure is expected to last about 18 months.

Mac Point masterplan released

The state government has released an updated version of the Macquarie Point masterplan which seems to have scrubbed the public bicycle parking.

This latest masterplan comes after the 2024 version and the government’s submission to the Tasmanian Planning Commission last year, which had public bicycle parking clearly marked on the plan.

Bicycle Network has contacted the Macquarie Point team to find out what’s happened to the bike parking and other questions about its designated cycling routes.

Forth Road roadworks may slow your ride

The Tasmanian Government is working on Forth Road 4–27 May to remove a road barrier to provide more road width on one corner.

Work will happen between 7 am and 6 pm, with lane closures and a reduced speed limit.
