Riders in Ballarat have a new connection to the centre of the regional city with the completion of the Grenville Street North path.
The $1.1 million project links Mair Street to the Bridge Mall creating an attractive connection through this busy area of the city centre.
The works included a shared path between Shepperd Street and Little Bridge Street, including signal upgrades to improve safety and traffic flow, and changes to permit two-way cycling between Davies Street and Grenville Street on Shepperd Street.
The City of Ballarat contributed $690,000 to the project while the state government contributed $435,000.
The path is the latest addition to the network of routes being established through the city’s Ballarat Safe Cycling Connections project, closing the gap to the Yarrowee River Trail and the Brown Hill Track.
Local Member for Wendouree, Juliana Addison MP, said it was fantastic to see the shared path completed and already being used by community.
“The Allan Labor Government is proud to invest in infrastructure that supports safer cycling and walking while strengthening connections through Ballarat's central precinct,” she said.
“These upgrades will help more cyclists and pedestrians move confidently between Mair Street and the Bridge Mall and support local businesses along the way.”
In the photo below, with the Mayor Cr Tracey Hargreaves on the left and Ms Addison on the right, you will notice the wheel barriers in the car park adjacent to the path that prevent vehicles encroaching across the trail — a crucial element of path design that is all too rarely implemented.
