North Coast transport plan out for consultation
The New South Wales Government is seeking feedback on the Draft North Coast Strategic Regional Integrated Transport Plan, which will shape the region's transport system for the next 20 years.

The plan sets out more than 50 short- and medium-term initiatives across active transport, public transport, roads and freight, intended to improve regional connections, build a more disaster-ready transport network, expand sustainable transport options and support tourism.

Draft initiatives affecting bikes include:

  • Developing behaviour change programs with councils to promote active transport as a preferred mode for everyday journeys through targeted marketing, community engagement and rideshare encouragement
  • Supporting the development, review and implementation of active transport plans, pedestrian access and mobility plans and Movement and Place plans across the region's councils
  • Working with councils to investigate priority active transport facilities, including: separated cycleway links along the Oxley Highway corridor between the Health and Education Precinct and Port Macquarie City Centre, safe cyclist crossings on key regional routes such as the Bruxner Highway between Ballina and Lismore, upgrading end-of-trip facilities such as secure bike parking at transport interchanges, considering 30km/h zones to improve cycling safety
  • Working with councils across the Northern Rivers to help deliver the remaining Northern Rivers Rail Trail sections
  • Planning for active transport from day one of new greenfield housing and employment developments
  • Reallocating road space for active transport around the Coffs Harbour Bypass
The plan is one of nine being developed across regional NSW to guide the future of transport infrastructure and services in the state.

Minister for the North Coast, Janelle Saffin, said: "This Draft Plan is about moving the North Coast forward with a clear, 20-year vision that prioritises local needs and real-world results.

"It reflects what we've heard from our community — the need for better connections, safer roads and more reliable transport options to support the way people live, work and travel every day.

"This is a once-in-a-decade opportunity for our community to lock in the priorities that matter to them and ensure our regional transport network is fit for the future."

Community members can view the draft plan and provide feedback until Sunday 14 June 2026 at https://www.haveyoursay.nsw.gov.au/sritp/north-coast.
