The Minister for Planning has signed off on several improvements being made to the bike infrastructure and landscape features being delivered as part of the North East Link Project.
The approval relates to the Eastern Freeway Upgrades from Tram Road to Springvale Road.
The Urban Design and Landscape Plan (UDLP) for that section was exhibited for public comment in September 2025, resulting in 125 submissions.
As a consequence, further design improvements were made, including:
- additional surface upgrades to the Koonung Creek Trail
- improved bridge screen and railing designs
- a larger open grassed area at Eram Park
- more trees and plants to screen noise walls at Junction Road and Frank Sedgman reserves
- colours for acrylic panels in noise walls inspired by the creek, trees and sky
- drinking fountains and bike repair stations for the Koonung Creek Trail.
Another UDLP, covering the contract for construction of the Eastern Freeway upgrade from Hoddle Street to Burke Road, has recently been on exhibition with outcomes expected soon.
For riders on the sections of trail along the Eastern Freeway to Burke Road, there will be extensive piling operations for the next few months.
Works will be mainly in the media, so no impacts on the use of the trails are expected.
