The level crossing removal and development of a new railway station at Spotswood in Melbourne’s inner south-west will deliver a new section of a key strategic corridor as well as much-needed secure bike parking, early design concepts have revealed.
Designs show a new separated path along Hall Street that will connect to the section on the other side of Hudsons Road recently constructed by the West Gate Tunnel Project.
This in turn links to the new route through to Shepherd Bridge and Veloway at Footscray Road.
The Hall Street Strategic Cycling Corridor, already in the design stage at the City of Hobsons Bay, continues to Newport Station.
As the level crossing removal is being delivered by a rail bridge over Hudsons Road, there is space in the undercroft below the new elevated station for a Parkiteer secure bike cage.
The existing heritage-listed main station building along Hope Street will be retained and incorporated into project designs.
Spotswood Station is expected to attract many more bike commuters in future years as the old industrial sites in South Kingsville, Altona North, Yarraville and Brooklyn are converted to housing. Spotswood is the closest station for those residents.
Elevating the rail line creates opportunities for community open space underneath, with trees, plants and seating for passengers, locals and visitors to local attractions including Scienceworks, Grazeland and the retail and dining on Hudsons Road.
The 513m rail bridge will start near Burleigh Street and return to grade before the West Gate Freeway bridges.
Vehicle height under the bridge at Hudsons Road will be restricted to 4.7m.
Construction will start in 2027 with the level crossing at Hudsons Road removed and new Spotswood Station open in 2028.
There are information sessions where you can learn more about the project, ask the project team questions and have a say on the designs.
You can attend in person at Spotswood Kingsville RSL 59 The Avenue, Spotswood, on Wednesday 10 June, 4.45pm to 7.30pm, or Sunday 14 June, 2.45pm to 5.30pm. Booking are essential so register online.
The Member for Williamstown, Melissa Horne, said: “The removal of the Hudsons Road level crossing, coupled with the truck ban, will transform Spotswood and make it safer and easier for locals to get around.”
