Bike riders have their first glimpse of the proposed underpasses that will replace the level crossing at Anderson Street, Yarraville Village.
In the concepts revealed this week there will be two underpasses, one close to Anderson Street near the signal boxes and the other near Murray Street further north.
The Anderson Street level crossing will be closed off to all traffic, creating the opportunity for a plaza along the street on the east side of the railway line.
At Anderson Street, where space is constrained, the underpass will have lifts on both sides to supplement the stairs while at Murray Street there will be ramps and stairs.
Although not revealed at this early stage of the designs, it would be helpful if the stairs at Anderson Street could be fitted with wheel ramps as they are at stations in Europe. This would allow bikes at that underpass to be wheeled down and up the stairs.
At Murray Street the ramps will need to tie in with the local bike routes that are used by riders to get to the station and station bike parking, as well as move around the village precinct.
There are information sessions and surveys for feedback.
Construction is scheduled to start in 2027, with the level crossing closed and new underpasses open in 2029.
Access to the station precinct is likely to be disrupted during construction. More information will be available closer to the time works start next year.
The Minister for Transport Infrastructure, Gabrielle Williams, said: “This project will improve safety, cut congestion and bring us closer to a boom gate-free Werribee Line.”
