Two regional New South Wales councils have suffered a major funding setback after the federal government denied an application to complete one of the nation’s leading rail trails.
Submitted in 2024, the $42 million application would have delivered funding to progress the Northern Rivers Rail Trail from Lismore to Bexhill.
With the NRRT covering four local government areas - the Tweed, Byron, Lismore and Richmond Valley councils - the funding application was jointly submitted by the Lismore and Byron shires. The money would've helped complete what will eventually be a 130km rail trail.
Lismore Mayor Steve Krieg said Council remained committed to the long-term vision of the NRRT and would now focus on future opportunities to finance the completion of the popular trail.
“We are disappointed in the funding decision handed down this week; delivering the rail trail through Lismore remains a strategic priority for Council,” Mayor Krieg said.
“From an economic development perspective, the Northern Rivers Rail Trail continues to represent a significant long-term tourism, visitation and connectivity opportunity for the Northern Rivers. The strategic rationale for the project remains strong.”
Mayor Krieg said Council was also planning for the project's eventual success by incorporating the rail trail into Lismore's road development and infrastructure works programmes.
“We are continuing to plan ahead so we are ready to move when future funding opportunities arise,” he said.
