Grants open for council safety projects
A Victorian road safety grant program focused on active transport has opened for 2026 applications.

Riders should make sure their local councillors are aware of these opportunities.

Funded by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC), the Local Government Grant Program aims particularly to reduce crashes involving pedestrians and bike riders.

Last year the program funded councils to deliver $2.6 million in road improvements.

The round opens on 9am Monday 15 June 2026 and closes on Wednesday 22 July 2026. A briefing session on the grant program will be held on Thursday 18 June 2026 at 12pm.

Successful applications will be notified in February next year, later than usual because of the state election later this year.

Grants are made in four categories:

  • analysis grants of up to $30,000 are available to investigate pedestrian and cyclist road safety issues, as well as develop concepts related to speed management and infrastructure treatments
  • infrastructure grants of up to $100,000 with a conditional 1:1 contribution from the local government area are available to implement cost-effective road safety infrastructure designed to reduce the likelihood and severity of crashes involving pedestrians and cyclists
  • road safety strategy and action plan grants of up to $50,000 are available for local government areas to develop a Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan; and
  • variable message sign grants of up to $30,000 are available for local government areas to purchase variable message signs for communicating key road safety messages and promoting safer behaviours among road users.
As the program uses the Safe System approach to road safety, there is a strong emphasis in the guidelines on initiatives that can lower speeds on local streets towards 30km/h.
