Riders in Newcastle have welcomed a new shared pathway through one of the city's most popular precincts.
The 320m, 3m-wide path runs along Reserve Road beside the coast, replacing a narrow footpath parallel to King Edward Park between The Terrace and York Drive.
The path not only supports commuters and children riding to school but also locals engaged in recreational riding or walking and tourists visiting Newcastle Beach and Bogey Hole.
The project was funded by $500,000 from Transport for NSW's Get NSW Active Program and delivered by the City of Newcastle.
It is the second project supported by the Get NSW Active Program in this area in the past year, with another $500,000 grant used to upgrade Memorial Drive at Bar Beach.
That project saw a shared path installed between Parkway Avenue and Empire Park, an improved pedestrian refuge on Bar Beach Avenue and the Memorial Drive pedestrian crossing replaced with a raised shared path crossing.
Member for Newcastle, Tim Crakanthorp, said the new Reserve Road path would further enhance the area.
"The benefits of active transport are boundless," he said.
"It supports personal physical and mental health, environmental health and the health of our community.
"This new walking and cycling path will allow the community to enjoy our beautiful coastline more safely."
