If you've ever chained your bike to a pole outside a railway station and spent not just the commute but the whole workday wondering whether it'll still be there when you get back, you'll understand exactly where Newcastle's cycling community is coming from.
Riders across the city are pushing back against what they describe as woefully inadequate bike storage at local railway stations. There's not a single secure bike locker available across Newcastle's train network, with the closest options at Maitland and Morisset.
“I've had my bike stolen before,” one rider recently told local ABC radio, “So I've lost a bit of faith in humanity after that.” Another, originally from Europe, pointed out that the bike storage on offer near stations back home was simply “amazing” by comparison.
The Newcastle Cycleways Movement is coordinating a campaign to send formal requests to Transport for NSW, targeting stations including Broadmeadow, the interchange, Hamilton, Cardiff, Waratah and Fassifern for secure locker facilities.
Organisers are asking members of the public to submit a request for either a bike shed or bike locker at their preferred station, via the Transport for NSW ‘bikelocker’ website.
