Specially kitted-out police have been using trail bikes to target the riders of illegal e-bikes on the New South Wales Central Coast.
Officers seized illegal e-bikes during a recent targeted operation to address ongoing community concerns about unlawful riders in the local area. ‘Operation Desino’ was conducted on 4 and 5 July 2026 in response to the use of unregistered trail bikes and unlawful e-bikes on roads, footpaths and public spaces.
The specialist police used trail bikes to patrol known hotspots. Two e-motorcycles were stopped on Soldiers Point Drive, Norah Head, after attempting to evade police. Roadside testing found both bikes capable of travelling in excess of 80km/h.
Riders were stopped on the Pacific Highway, Lake Munmorah, with roadside testing finding the bikes were capable of travelling in excess of 64km/h.
Another rider was stopped on Bungary Road, Norah Head, and testing found that both of the bikes were capable of travelling at more than 44km/h.
In addition, police attended several addresses to speak with residents regarding community reports and concerns.
Forward Commander, Inspector David Piddington, said the operation delivered a strong road safety message while receiving positive feedback from the community.
“Residents have consistently raised concerns about unlawful riders placing themselves and others at risk,” he said.
“This operation demonstrates our commitment to addressing those concerns and improving safety in public spaces," Inspector Piddington said.
“We were pleased with the positive engagement from the community and Tuggerah Lakes Police will continue to conduct targeted enforcement under Operation Desino.”
Police remind the community that e-bikes and motorcycles used on public roads and road-related areas must comply with relevant registration and road transport laws.
