Longford–Perth path to add 1.25 km

The Tasmanian Government has released plans for the last section of its Illawarra Road upgrade, with the shared path to be extended by 1.25 km from Pateena Road towards Longford.

The road will have 2 m wide shoulders up to the first bridge, and the traffic speed limit was reduced from 100 km/h to 80 km/h in May last year in response to consultation feedback.

The path will stop on the outskirts of Longford at the first bridge as there is no funding to add a path onto the existing bridges or build a new bridge to take the path into the centre of town.

This means the new path is unlikely to attract more users as only confident riders will be able to ride the last leg on the road.

Kingborough Council passes budget for cycling

Kingborough Council has passed a $21 million capital works program for the coming year that includes progress on cycling infrastructure.

The projects proposed for funding include a mobile pump track at Kingston to compensate for the MTB Park that will be closed during construction of the Tasmanian Devils facilities,

And improving bike lanes on Channel Highway through Taroona by widening in a few places and formalising car parking spaces – the changes are due to be completed before the end of this year.

Rail trail social rides start

The first 18 km rides roll out of Scottsdale on Sunday 12 and 25 July, 30 km rides are the go on Sunday 16 and 29 August and another 18 km ride on Sunday 13 September.

All rides leave from Scottsdale trail head at 9.30 am and there will be a coffee catchup after all of them.
Petition against MTB Park demolition open for signatures

Kingborough local Andrew McKay has started a petition calling on the council to stop the demolition of the mountain bike and dog parks to make way for an AFL training facility.

“We would prefer to see such a football training facility built (if at all) adjacent to existing football ovals, with mimimal impact on our beloved, currently existing facilities.
It should be noted that the MTB park has been recently upgraded, with a bathroom and new pump track. The location is ideal for many users,” the petition states.

Kingborough Council has said it will rebuild mountain bike facilities alongside the AFL centre but they won’t be available for another two years.
