Lorne, the popular holiday town on the Great Ocean Road, will get active transport links throughout the township.
With the Otway Ranges in the hinterland, there is some great riding territory that attracts interest year-round.
But the town itself can be hostile to people walking and riding, and in summer that is how many people travel.
Surf Coast Shire is now inviting the community to help shape the future of walking and cycling in Lorne, by contributing to concept plans for safer and more connected active transport links throughout the township.
The Shire is reviewing pedestrian and cycling connections to identify opportunities to improve access to community facilities, tourist attractions, local businesses and other key destinations.
Community feedback will help identify priority locations and guide future concept designs.
Councillor Leon Walker said Council wanted to hear from everyone who lives in, works in or visits Lorne.
“Walking and cycling are part of everyday life in Lorne, and we want to hear from the community about where the missing links are and what improvements would make the biggest difference,” he said.
“Whether you’re walking to the beach, riding to school or getting around town, your local knowledge will help us understand the challenges people experience and identify opportunities to improve safety and connectivity.”
Lorne currently has limited pathway and road crossing options, with several missing links identified through the Surf Coast’s Safer Cycling Strategy.
“The people who use the streets know them best,” said Cr Walker.
“Your feedback will help us identify where improvements are needed most and strengthen future funding applications to deliver the projects that matter most to the community.”
