Homicide Squad detectives have charged a man with murder in relation to the hit-run collision in Cockatoo last month.
Initially, a 44-year-old Cockatoo man was arrested and has since been exonerated.
Detectives later arrested and charged the alleged driver, a 27-year-old Cockatoo man, in Cockatoo on 27 June.
He was charged with intentionally cause serious injury and dangerous driving causing serious injury.
These charges have since been upgraded to murder.
The 27-year-old man has been remanded in custody to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 18 September.
Update 14 July 2026
A man who was seriously injured in a collision between a car and a bike rider in Cockatoo in June has died in hospital.
The cyclist was allegedly struck by a Ford Territory on Pakenham Road about 3pm on Friday 26 June.
The cyclist, a 47-year-old man of no fixed address, was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Territory allegedly failed to stop at the scene, then dumped the vehicle at a nearby reserve on Hillside Road.
Homicide Squad are now investigating the matter and will consider whether the charges will be upgraded.
A Cockatoo man was remanded to next appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 18 September.
27 June 2026
A man has been charged following a collision between a car and a cyclist in Cockatoo on Friday 26 June 2026.
Emergency services were called to the collision on Pakenham Road about 2.40pm.
The cyclist, a 47-year-old man of no fixed address, was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
It is alleged the driver failed to stop at the scene and dumped the vehicle at a nearby reserve on Hillside Road.
A 44-year-old Cockatoo man was arrested nearby and released pending further enquiries.
Detectives later arrested the alleged driver, a 27-year-old Cockatoo man, in Cockatoo about 12.20am on Saturday 27 June 2026.
He has been charged with intentionally causing serious injury and dangerous driving causing serious injury.
