Construction has begun to make a pop-up cycleway at Parramatta’s Harris Park permanent, as part of a $3.2 million streetscape overhaul.
The temporary pop-up cycleway along Wigram Street and Cambridge Street was installed in 2021.
Since then, it has become a popular route for people cycling to Harris Park and the Parramatta CBD.
As well as making the cycleway permanent, the City of Parramatta will restore street parking on the southern side of Cambridge Street, plant more trees to provide a greater canopy, install a continuous footpath on Station Street West and unground overhead powerlines.
St Oliver’s Primary School students will benefit from a new crossing of Wigram Street, with the existing crossing of Allen Street also upgraded to meet current standards.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said the cycle path is part of an active transport revolution in the area.
“Whether you are trying to get to Harris Park Station, enjoy the atmosphere of Little India or get to Parramatta CBD, this permanent cycle path will allow you to do so safely.
“More than 86,000 cyclists have used this pop-up cycleway since it opened which proves this infrastructure is needed for the Harris Park community.”
Member for Parramatta Donna David added: “Cycling is a healthy, affordable way to get around the Parramatta region – and thanks to this investment, it’s now much safer too.
“It’s pleasing to see tens of thousands of people use this cycle path – unlocking better access to jobs and services, connecting our communities now and into the future.
“As well, improvements to road safety at St Oliver’s Primary School are long overdue and will be welcomed by the community who have advocated for this for many years.”
The project is funded by the state government’s Transport for NSW Get NSW Active program.
