Major new bike corridor revealed

A new strategic cycling corridor for Melbourne has been revealed in planning documents for the new Suburban Rail Loop precinct surrounding the proposed Monash Suburban Rail Loop station.

The new addition to Melbourne’s Strategic Cycling Corridor network is the first formal change to the map since 2020.

It will be added to Blackburn Road between Wellington and Normanby Road along Monash University, where there is an existing section of off-road shared trail.

To complete the connection to the station there will also need to be a new link along Normanby Road to Gardiner Road.

The State Government has recently released the final planning rules for the neighbourhoods that will emerge around the new stations for the suburban rail link in Melbourne East.

Following several years of extensive community consultation, final structure plans and planning scheme amendments have been approved for Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood and Box Hill.

These plans, along with those developed for the activity centres proposed around many other rail and tram nodes across Melbourne, in the coming years, will inevitably result in further additions to the Strategic Cycling Corridor network.

Minister for Planning, Sonya Kilkenny, this week released the final planning controls for the two Inner City Train and Tram Zones, meaning there are now 50 Train and Tram Zones where planning controls are finalised.

With housing capacity being boosted in suitable precincts on the public transport network, combined with higher-density developments where products and services are available much closer to homes, there will be significant shifts to active and public transport.

These new precincts will have street configurations much more conducive to bike riding by a wide range of residents and visitors.

We should expect more announcements of riding and walking facilities to service these new centres later this year.
