One more piece of Sydney's cycling puzzle is a step closer to fitting into place.
Transport for NSW has approved the Wilson Street cycleway, closing a long-standing gap in the inner-Sydney active transport network.
The project extends the existing separated cycleway on Wilson Street, east of Erskineville Road, through to Eliza Street in Newtown — linking the one-way bike lane on Wilson Street with the shared zone on Eliza Street. Until now, riders on that stretch had no choice but to share the often chaotic strip with cars, vans, taxis and buses.
Wilson Street is a heavily used route, connecting Carriageworks, nearby parks and Moore Park through some of inner Sydney's busiest development. The upgrade adds a new 150-metre bi-directional cycleway on the north side of the street, removes 75 metres of cycleway on the south side (which is replaced by the new path), and adds a raised priority crossing between Erskineville Road and Brown Street to tie the two sections together.
The left turn from Wilson Street onto Erskineville Road will be banned for vehicles, some bike turns will be restricted, and a new off-peak loading zone will operate on Erskineville Road.
TfNSW says the project supports its 2025 Connecting NSW Strategy that focusses on reallocating road space for smarter transport solutions, improving safety in line with the state's zero-trauma target, and giving riders of all ages and abilities a viable alternative.
The plan followed an environmental review that was on public display for 32 days last year and attracted more than 1000 submissions.
Construction of the Wilson St Cycleway is expected to start later this year and run for around 11 months.
