Update
The trial that tested a solution for a smoother Dixon Veloway has wrapped up, conclusively indicating that the rough expansion joints can be smoothed over.
Veloway operator Transurban has been trialling an infill solution that involves placing a strip of material across the sharp gap at each expansion joint.
Riders were asked to provide feedback on the experience of riding across the treated gap and the response from the community has been positive, with most people reporting a smoother and more comfortable riding experience over the infilled joint.
Transurban is appreciative of the many riders that provided feedback for the trial.
Transurban is now reviewing the community feedback against their technical assessment to determine the treatment's suitability for broader use.
Maintaining the long-term performance of the expansion joints will be a key consideration in this process and additional trials may be required to refine the design.
Transurban will provide a further update once this assessment is complete.

While Melbourne’s sleek Veloway bike route has received universal acclaim for its safe, direct and quick journey between the CBD and the inner west, the multiple expansion joints in the steel structure have met a rough reception from riders.
Expansion joints are a given with steel structures such as bridges and ramps, and while they can be rough, they are tolerable.
But the Veloway is long and continuous, and otherwise totally smooth, and so the slightly too abrupt gaps at the joins are just really annoying.
For months now the Veloway manager, Transurban, with input from the State Government and Bicycle Network, has been considering options for a solution that could smooth our ride.
One infill treatment is being trialled now and Transurban will assess the modified joint’s performance and consider rider feedback to help determine next steps.
If the trial is successful, there will be a reviews of additional expansion joint locations where this modification would provide improvements.
