Heading high into the hills in February

Lots of our rides this fortnight have a few climbs in them, so cross your fingers that the winds are lying low and head out on your bike to test your knees and thighs, or just take the e-bike!

River to Mountain – Friday 11 February

The 31.4 km River to Mountain ride on Friday 11 February is a great challenge, heading from Cornelian Bay to Fern Tree for lunch then gliding back down the hill.

Leaving Cornelian Bay at 10am the group will head down the cycleway, through the city then along the Rivulet path for the upward climb via Strickland Avenue. Lunch at the Fern Tree Tavern or you can BYO to have in the park opposite before heading back down with a return of about 1.30 pm.

Kingston Creeks and Hills – Saturday 12 February

Get to know Kingston and Huntingfield paths and quieter roads in this 2.5 hour route starting at the Huon Highway and John Street roundabout at 9.45 am.

The 19.5 km route includes the Whitewater Creek path and paths through Peter Murrell Reserve before taking the road through Howden and Blackmans Bay, back to the starting point via Kingston Beach.

E-bike Coffee Cruise: Lenah Valley Looper – Thursday 17 February
UPDATE: this e-bike social ride has moved to the city. Phil will lead you on a wide loop around the city and including some gravel offroad sections (we have such variety in our city!). E-bikes very useful given the hills involved, probably not suitable for trikes.

Meet at 9.45 am at Whisk Cafe, Augusta Rd, Lenah Valley. Coffee stop will be back at Whisk & Co Cafe.

Tunnels and Bridges – Saturday 19 February

The 25 km Tunnels and Bridges ride on Saturday 19 February can help experienced and inexperienced riders discover paths and shortcuts off the Intercity Cycleway.

Meet at 9.15 am at the Cenotaph car park to head up the Cycleway, then take quiet roads and paths around Derwent Park and Montrose before returning via the cycleway with a coffee stop along the way.

Knocklofty Knee Trembler – Saturday 26 February

The Knocklofty Knee Trembler on Saturday 26 February is an oldie but a goodie, with 22 km of climbing through West Hobart and Mt Stuart before returning on the easier Intercity Cycleway.

Meet ride leader Greg at 9.15 am at the Cenotaph car park – the route has a mix of gravel tracks, roads, paths and some steep sections. You will ideally have a bike with low gearing and wide enough tyres for gravel, and e-bikes welcomed.

KBUG Pipeline Track – Sunday 27 February

The Kingborough Bicycle Users Group are heading across the border to try the 25 km ride from Fern Tree to the end of the Pipeline Track and back on Sunday 27 February.

Meet ride leader Angela at the Fern Tree Tavern car park at 9.15 am for the 2.5 hour ride on gravel path – it is rough in sections so best to bring a mountain bike or low-geared touring or e-bike.

Coffee back at the tavern. RSVP to https://ridewithgps.com/events/167850-kbug-pipeline-track

Burnie Loop – Sunday 27 February

The Sunday 27 February ride will head out of Burnie and into the hills towards Stowport.

Meet at 10.45 am at the Burnie Yacht Club car park for the 36.6 km loop up through Fern Glade to Stowport Road then back along Upper Natone and Minna roads. An easier option will also be available along the coast west or east of Burnie.

Upcoming rides & events

Social rides are featured in each edition of In the Loop, but if you want more notice visit our social rides calendar, which is regularly updated.

Bicycle Network Tasmania accredits Social Ride Leaders and requires anyone interested in leading rides to be accredited. If you would like to be one of our Ride Leaders, please email our Rides Coordinator with your contact details and what sort of riding you are interested in and we'll let you know when the next Ride Leader Skills Development Workshop is scheduled.

COVID-19 guidelines

Our social rides leaders are following a set of protocols to help make our rides compliant with government directions:

  • Meeting places for rides will have plenty of space for people to maintain 1.5 to 2 metre distancing while unloading bikes, listening to the briefing, and getting ready to ride.
  • Riders are asked to register online or via phone so there is no paper being handed around on the day.
  • Please have a mask handy if you intend to finish with coffee or snack with other riders.

People are asked not to attend rides if they have fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, shortness of breath or runny nose or are in mandated isolation or quarantine.
