Perth road to become riding, walking link

The Northern Midlands Council has approved the closure of 505 metres of a Perth road to be converted to a bike riding and walking link, and new underpass beneath the rail line.

The $3.6 million project includes the closure of Youl Road between Edwards and Cromwell streets, a new path linking to the shared path towards Longford at the end of Oakmount Street, stormwater upgrades, and an underpass beneath the rail line linking the new Youl Road pathway to Norfolk Street.

The works will connect two areas of Perth cut off by the rail line and provide a link to the shared path towards Longford, which was built as part of the highway bypass in 2020.

Budget support for bike riding funding weakens

The Tasmanian government’s commitment to safe bike riding infrastructure has weakened in forward estimates in the latest 2024-25 budget.

While funding this year and next maintains $2 million a year, in the following two years the government is only committing $500,000 a year.

Bicycle Network has written to the government to express our disappointment that funding is failing to keep up with the government’s strategic aims of getting more people riding.
