Many of the best and most relaxing bike riding experiences are along our beautiful rivers, creeks and wetlands.
Waterways are ideal locations for biking and walking paths as they are usually flat while the roads and railway go over the top.
More recently, with all the massive native plantings along waterway corridors, vegetation and wildlife has returned.
But there is a threat: litter is an ongoing threat to vegetation, and especially the wildlife that has been attracted to new habitat.
Litter can affect the appearance of our waterways and also causes serious harm to the ecosystems and wildlife that depend on them.
As bike riders, we benefit from these pristine environments and consequently, we have a duty to keep them that way.
A new litter prevention campaign from Melbourne Water, which manages many Melbourne waterways, is a prompt for riders all over Australia to ensure they bin their trash or bring it home.
Wherever you are across the country, there are sure to be similar campaigns and activities that you can get involved in.
