Further section of Cairns Southern Access Cycleway open
The Cairns Southern Access Cycleway is now open for bike riders between Bana Gindarja Creek in Edmonton and Caleb Shang Bridge in White Rock.

The path now provides 16 kilometres of uninterrupted cycleway to Riverstone Road in Gordonvale.

The remaining section of the Cairns Southern Access Cycleway (Caleb Shang Bridge to Ruth Street) is currently in planning, although there is at present no funding secured for its construction.

Once complete, the off-road path will link up with existing cycleways to provide a continuous 20-kilometre route from the centre of Cairns to Gordonvale, connecting several schools, businesses and shopping precincts. Its completion is expected to be a big win for local bike riders and Far North Queensland tourism.

The path will have limited intersections to encourage riders of all ages and abilities to use it.

The project has been in the works since 2019 and is jointly funded by the state and federal governments, with a total investment to date of $41.53 million.

The cycleway will be named the Luke Azzopardi Cycleway once complete. Mr Azzopardi was a well-respected Gordonvale resident who made significant sporting and community contributions.
