Register for Super Tuesday North and give bikes a boost

Australia’s biggest count of bike riders, Super Tuesday, will head north next month to tally cycling commuters in Queensland and the Northern Territory and get better insights into when and where people ride bikes.

Registrations opened earlier in August and some locations still have count sites available, including in Darwin, Alice Springs, Katherine and Moreton Bay in Queensland.

Anthea Hargreaves, Bicycle Network’s General Manager of Public Affairs, encouraged locals to get involved in Super Tuesday North to help highlight to their council the importance of bike riding.

“By volunteering at Super Tuesday North you can show your local council exactly what is happening out on the streets. The data you gather could be the starting point for a new bike lane or path outside your front door,” said Ms Hargreaves.

Participating volunteers will receive a $50 donation to pass on to a local sporting club, community group or not-for-profit organisation of their choice, as well as a Bicycle Network hat and lanyard to identify themselves on the day.

“It’s a great opportunity for the local footy club or school to register together and fundraise, as well as individual bike lovers. At least $9,000 will be donated to local communities from Super Tuesday North.”

Super Tuesday North will record data on the time of day people are riding, which direction they are travelling and gender.

Last year Super Tuesday North recorded Darwin as one of the only places in Australia with a 50/50 split of male and female bike riders, while significant growth in bike rider numbers was recorded in Moreton Bay, Toowoomba and Townsville in Queensland.”

“We would love to see more areas reach a 50/50 gender split, as well as record an increase in bike rider numbers overall to highlight to councils the importance committing to bicycle infrastructure,” added Ms Hargreaves.
