The first section of the Yarra Valley Trail—from Lilydale to Yering—is almost completed and should be open for the holidays.
The 7.5km "stage 1a" of the project is proceeding quickly with roughly 1km of surfacing laid per day.
Bridge construction is currently underway, and pile driving and abutments have been installed. The piles are being driven down to bedrock, 12 metres below the surface.
The works were delayed slightly to enable the strengthening of the bridge structures to allow emergency and trail maintenance vehicles full access along the trail.
The 40 kilometres of trail will connecting Lilydale with Yarra Glen and Healesville, then across to the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail, creating a valley-wide loop.
Works to install signage and fencing will continue over the coming weeks.
This stage will have equestrian access as well as in future stages where feasible.
