Yanchep crit track
Crit-style bike track gathers momentum in Perth

A new bike track around Splendid Park in Yanchep, north of Perth, is an exciting prospect for local bike riders and future events.

The criterium-width track design includes a timing system and built-in registration area, making it ideal for casual riding, racing, schools' bike education and bike riding events.

Northern Beaches Cycling Club president Chris Howard said: “It is the first of its kind in WA and will attract Statewide sporting tourism.

“Its dimensions, together with purpose built registration area and event hub will make it the premier venue for major events.”

The proposed track has been carefully planned through local consultation, including a 290-signature petition supporting the bike path, which will improve lighting and security around the park.

“The design has been thoroughly thought out to engage all riders of all abilities, including those with unique access requirements such as hand cycles for those with disabilities,” said Chris Howard.

“The inclusion of a timing system will greatly encourage the community to get on their bikes and challenge their own personal bests, whether that be times or number of laps.

“I am most excited at the prospect of getting more kids riding their bikes and seeing the joy of mastering bike riding skills and the thrill of riding fast.”

A recent council recommendation to extend the width of the circuit to criterium standards has boosted the cost up to $2.59 million, with $1.58M already budgeted by the City.

Pending budget and permits, a contractor for the project is expected by November this year, with hopes that construction could be completed by November 2022.

Over the last crazy couple of years, we have seen the popularity of bike riding boom around the country, as people search for new modes of transport and ways of staying active. Projects like this are an exciting way to keep this ball rolling for those who may be rediscovering their love for bike riding, as well as those who never lost it.
