Work is underway on a new masterplan for the lower reaches of the Moorabool and Barwon Rivers through Geelong, potentially creating new opportunities for combining bike riding with nature and culture.
The plan will cover the area stretching from near Meredith in the north, through Geelong and to the estuary at Barwon Heads.
The work is part of a long-term project to bring better health to the rivers and creeks in the region and to connect more people to these places.
There has been haphazard development of bike and pedestrian routes in the river corridors, but a more comprehensive and cohesive network of connections is essential.
The project has been named Kitjarra-dja-bul Bullarto langi-ut by Wadawurrung traditional owners and translates to “places of many stories”.
Now, with public consultation open for input, the community has an opportunity to shape the masterplan so that active transport connections are available to take people into what will become a magnificent environment.

Documents describe the objectives of the masterplan as "connecting people to the lower Moorabool and lower Barwon River corridor by balancing public access, recreation, economic opportunities and education while enhancing the area’s unique cultural and environmental values.”
