Hobart bike parking gets creative

The City of Hobart is trialling some on-street bike parking in Gladstone Street, utilising a car parking bay that was blocking sightlines from a driveway.

Three hoops have been installed in the bay, close to the pathology centre where many people stop off during the day to give samples for testing.

The City has also cleaned up and re-opened the Argyle Street bicycle cage, but this time with allocated codes for access and CCTV for extra security and in a nice touch, e-bike charging will be available.

People who would use the cage regularly can apply for a security code at the car park office – remember to bring ID.

Intercity Cycleway disruptions but no closures

TasWater is inspecting its West Derwent No.1 Pipeline from 26 September until late November, which will involve some disruption to the Intercity Cycleway between Elwick Road and Berriedale.

The good news is there will be no closures although there may be delays as equipment is moved on and off the cycleway, between 9 am and 3 pm, Monday to Friday.

Note that the repair and maintenance holes will be backfilled as work progresses, so the path surface may not be as smooth as you are used to.

North-west riders call for sign removal

A north-west rider has called for the coastal pathway to be built to solve a pinchpoint on the Bass Highway going over Blythe River.

Alison Horch was quoted in The Advocate newspaper saying a large sign prevents cyclists getting up off the road and onto a path that would better protect them through the tight crossing.

A Department of State Growth spokesperson is quoted saying they would work with Central Coast Council to relocate the sign if it decided to extend the path through the pinchpoint.

Greens candidates aim for 1000 ebikes
Greens Hobart Council candidates have announced their ambition for the city to add 1000 ebikes to its streets over the next term.

They're proposing an ebike library so people get the chance to try before they buy, and a bulk purchase of ebikes to bring the cost down.

Bill Harvey and Gemma Kitsos launched the policy astride ebikes, of course.
