New Marshall Station designs out

There have been further developments in the design of the new Marshall Station south of Geelong, but still no public confirmation of the level of bike parking facilities for the project.

The new station is being delivered as part of the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication project which will provide much better rail facilities to the suburbs south of central Geelong.

Not far from Marshall Station in the same precinct, another big project—the Barwon Heads Road upgrade—is building a road bridge over the rail line to remove the old level crossing.

Both the road duplication and the rail duplication are delivering high-quality bike trails into and through the precinct.

If the connections are done right there will be great opportunities for the community to make full use of bikes to get to and from this station, and beyond.

The upgrades at Marshall Station include a new second platform, a rebuilt station building with an enclosed waiting room, an accessible pedestrian overpass and an architecturally designed canopy over the new entrance forecourt.

More than 200 new car parking spaces will be added at Marshall Station, along with a dedicated bus interchange, to help improve safety for pedestrians and vehicles around the precinct.

A Parkiteer bike cage is expected, along with numerous exterior hoops. Unusually, however, no precise details are publicly available.

Also hazy is how these major new trails are going to connect together and into local routes, so that train travellers can get themselves from work and home to the station.

Rail Projects Victoria is inviting feedback on the Marshal Station upgrade, so there is an opportunity to seek a more complete explanation.

The Marshall Station upgrade survey is open until 5pm Sunday 9 October
