Local roads across regional Victoria with high crash rates have been targeted for safety upgrades as part of a $20 million Safe Travel in Local Streets program.
The works have taken place across major townships in Victoria, including Geelong, Bendigo, Shepparton, and Gippsland. Safety upgrades have been delivered to the following roads as part of the program:
- Geelong: Donnybrook, Princess, Purnell and Sparks Roads
- Bendigo: Barkley Street, Averys Road, Browning Street, Hargreaves Street, Nelson Street and Sternberg Street
- Mildura: San Mateo Avenue
- Shepparton: Stewart Street, Corio Street, Byass Street, Purcell Street
- Mooroopna: An, Alexandra, Northgate and Morell Streets
- Sale: Macarthur and Market Streets
- Warrnambool: Merrivale Drive
- Port Fairy: James Street
- Portland: Percy Street
A number of traffic calming measures have been implemented, including roundabouts, traffic islands, speed bumps, raised intersections and pedestrian crossings. A number of bike lanes have also been built.
The goal is to make local streets safer for all types of transport.
The Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll said: “these targeted upgrades have boosted safety for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists in communities regionally, helping drive down road trauma and get all Victorians home safely at the end of every day”.
